Cycling Trail around Lake Hallstatt

Around Lake Hallstatt

Once around Lake Hallstatt, this is a "must" for many mountain bikers on a holiday in the Salzkammergut. No wonder, because the eastern shore of the fjord-like mountain lake invites you to "unwind". Every now and then benches and shady places for a little stopover. Just great!
From Bad Goisern to Hallstatt

There are many variants of this tour - we have chosen this version for the description: We start our approximately 41-kilometer tour at the parking lot "Mitte" on the Salzkammergut main road (B145). From here, the path leads us through the village to the district of "Stamm" and further along the Pass Gschütt main road (B166) on the western shore of Lake Hallstatt to the world-famous salt mining town of Hallstatt.

From Hallstatt to Obertraun

From Hallstatt, the route continues along the southern shore on a well-developed cycle path to Obertraun. If you feel like it, you can take a "dip in the cool water" at the lido on hot days, before continuing along the east bank cycle path along the lake.

More about the lake

The fjord-like lake landscape, shaped by glacial ice from the Ice Age, is impressive. About 10,000 years ago, the lake acquired its current appearance with the greatest width of 2.1 km and the greatest length of 8.2 kilometers. Between the lakeshore and the railway, a gravel path leads across meadows, past individual houses, up and down, also in the forest (swimming opportunities, even if you don't have a bathing suit with you).

From Obertraun back to Bad Goisern

On the way, we pass the Hallstatt train station and pass the deepest point of Lake Hallstatt over a suspension bridge. Here it goes xxx meters into the water. On steel slabs, which are attached to the rock, we continue in the direction of Bad Goisern. A Scottish path is always our companion. And if you want to fortify yourself in between, we recommend a stop at the rustic "Seeraunzn".

Well strengthened, we then go on the last stage of our "round trip". We continue our "journey" on a well-maintained paved road. We pass a stone house, the former inn "Tuscher" and cross under the railway line of the Salzkammergut railway several times. Shortly after the Maislinger bakery, we get back on the Pass Gschütt federal road (B166) and continue our journey towards the starting point. Here, after about 4 hours, depending on the breaks, our bike trip around Lake Hallstatt ends.

Tip for all families

It is not recommended to bike with children along the busy, narrow and winding main road between Steeg and Hallstatt. That's why our tip: From the Goiser village of "Steeg", at the Gasthof Post, directly to the Ostufer-Ra

We hope you enjoy cycling around Lake Hallstatt in the heart of the Salzkammergut.
