Blocking of paths during construction work on the new cable car to the Salzberg
Dear hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers,
Please note that the hiking trail to the Salzberg, the so-called "Serpentine Path", is closed. The reason is construction work for the construction of the new Salzberg cable car. These are expected to take place until spring 2026. Therefore, the ascent to the Plassen and to the "Steingrabenschneid" as well as to the Glücksplatz "Dammwiese" is currently only possible via the Echerntal. Expect an additional walking time of about 60 to 90 minutes!
Changes possible at any time!
However, due to the construction work on the Salzberg, short-term changes can also occur at any time. Therefore, a tip: Plan your route very carefully before the start of the tour. Information about short-term changes is also available from the Hallstatt Tourist Office.
We thank you for your understanding and wish you an unforgettable hiking experience on Lake Hallstatt.

Dear visitors and guests, Since September 1, 2025, the salt mine in Hallstat has been closed due to extensive construction work. These will last until June 2026. Also affected by the closure is access to the Skywalk above Hallstatt and the cable car to the Salzberg is also out of service during the reconstruction work. For all those who do not want to miss out on a visit to the salt mine, the Salt Mine has set up a daily bus shuttle to the neighboring Altaussee Salt Mine. Note for hikers: "Salzkammergut Soleweg"
Hallstatt - Steeg section closed
Steeg - Ebensee open
Dear hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers, the "Salzkammergut Soleweg" between Hallstatt and Ebensee am Traunsee remains closed in sections. This means in detail: The path from the Salzberg (name of the mountain) in Hallstatt to the Bad Goiser district of "Steeg" is currently closed. The duration of the ban is not foreseeable. Please do not climb over the barrier. Walking on the path is life-threatening due to recurring rockfalls!
Steeg - Ebensee open
Good news for hikers: the path from the Goiser district of "Steeg" to Bad Ischl and on to the Traunsee to Ebensee is freely walkable.
Alternative Routen
If you would like to hike from Hallstatt to Bad Ischl, we can recommend the "East Bank Hiking Trail". Take the ferry to Hallstatt train station, then continue on foot on the trail in the direction of the Bad Goiser district of "Untersee" and from there in the direction of "Steeg". From here you will reach the "Soleweg". The walking time for this section is about 3 hours.
We hope you enjoy hiking in the Salzkammergut
