Arrival by bus
By bus to the World Heritage Site
One piece of information in advance: there are many bus connections that lead to the region. In the following description, we have concentrated on the most traveled route.
From Salzburg to Bad Ischl
All four towns in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut are connected to the public bus network. This allows you to reach Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt, Gosau, Hallstatt and Obertraun comfortably and easily by public transport.
The most frequented line is the route from Salzburg to Lake Hallstatt and the Gosau Valley. The "Line 150" begins at the main station in Salzburg, leads past Lake Fuschl and Lake Wolfgang to Bad Ischl. The bus runs every hour, at times also every half hour. The exact timetable can be found on the Internet at www.scotty.at. Line 150 ends in the spa and imperial town of Bad Ischl and you have to change trains. The bus stops right in front of the train station. Alternatively, you can also continue your journey by train (ÖBB).
From Bad Ischl to Lake Hallstatt and the Gosau Valley
If you have chosen the bus, it will take you to Hallstatt, Obertraun and Gosau in about 40 - 50 minutes. Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt can be reached in about 20 minutes by car. Important: To get to Hallstatt, you have to change from bus 541 to bus 543 at the "Gosaumühle" stop. For orientation: The central stop for Hallstatt visitors is called "Hallstatt Lahn".
For passengers in the direction of Gosautal, the motto is: stay seated. Line 541 takes you directly from Bad Ischl via Bad Goisern to Gosau and Lake Gosau.
Please note that in the evening hours there is no longer a bus service between Bad Ischl to Hallstatt, Gosau, Obertraun and Bad Goisern. The last bus in this direction leaves the train station in Bad Ischl at 6:16 p.m. Please plan this for your arrival by bus.
For all journeys by public transport in the Salzkammergut, the following applies: Preparation is everything! Plan your arrival or departure as well as your day trip in good time. Otherwise, you may miss the last bus and have to resort to an expensive taxi.
If you have any questions, please direct them to the friendly staff of the local tourist offices or to your host. They will be happy to help you with your request.
Good to know!
Finally, we would like to point out that food is not allowed on board the public buses. All buses of the Upper Austrian Transport Association (OÖVV) have Wi-Fi. You can get the tickets directly from the bus driver. You can pay either with cash or with an EC or ATM or credit card. If you have heavy luggage, you can also transport it in the hold of the buses. Please contact the bus driver. He will be happy to help you.
Whatever you decide, we wish you a "safe journey"!
